A Day in the Life of a Health Coach

I’m often up late at night working, writing, connecting, answering messages, and much more, so I do not get up at a “traditional” hour. Besides that, there are some days I sleep in even longer due to simply needing more sleep.

As I am a writer and health coach, my day encompasses both roles. Just like everyone else, I have family things going on each day as well and that doesn’t stop just because I work from home. What I love most is being able to have a flexible schedule, take care of my puppy, and just do what I’m passionate about! This was yesterday’s day:

11:15am- Time to wake up, take my parents’ dog (Daisy) and my own pup (Jasper) out for their morning potty trip, and finally coffee + healthy breakfast! My usual go-to is whole grain toast with peanut butter and sliced banana on top. Yum!

Noon- Fed Jasper and catch up on Facebook notifications + touch bases with friends and clients, answer emails, and whatever else needs to be done while my brain is “waking up.”

1:30pm- Jasper needed to be taken out again for a potty run and to have some playtime. We tossed around his toys, played keep away and tug-of-war, and generally did whatever got him running around and getting some energy out.

2:15pm- Poor little Jasper had to be crated so mommy could get a workout in… I did YOUv2 our new workout that was just released last week! It is dancing to 80’s and 90’s music with a fun and charismatic trainer named Leandro Carvalho. I love love love the workout and am excited and pumped to do it each time.

3pm- Made a run out to the car to carry a package of water in that my mom went out to get. She can’t carry it in herself, so I needed to do it. Next I took Jasper out for a potty run again, and finally Daisy.

3:30pm- Drank my Shakeology shake. Today I started “drinking” it with a spoon that I had been using to stir it up, but found myself eating the rest of it with the spoon. It was super satisfying that way!

4pm- Time to get back to work messaging my own coach and touching bases with friends, catching up with my clients, and whatever else I need to catch up on for the afternoon. I also checked in on my Facebook groups and pages at this time. Yesterday I created an event for a live webinar in the group for Wednesday, my first ever FB live webinar.

5:30pm- I took Jasper out again and then did some dishes while he hung out in the bathroom. Only two safe places for him are the bathroom or his crate because otherwise he gets into mischief! He did really well in there and didn’t whine until I was almost done.

6pm- Played with Jasper in the room, throwing toys, playing tug-of-war, and getting him to run around like a lunatic!

6:30pm- Cooked dinner. Tonight we had tacos. I usually do tacos in a bowl, or have a taco salad. However, I indulged this evening with two tacos. Fully tracked and accounted for.

7pm- Caught up again on Facebook with friends and clients, while the pup slept in his crate. He was a crack up though, sleeping upside down, his little back legs resting on the back of the crate and he looked so peaceful that it made me smile!

7:45pm- I let the rascal out of his cage, got my running shoes on, put his harness on him, and made sure we were all set for a walk.

8pm- We left for our walk and we decided to walk on the main road today, which was fun for Jasper as someone had dropped a piece of cake on the sidewalk and he managed to snatch a bite while we walked. On our way back home, we ran into a puppy that’s a little older than him and they played for a couple minutes.

8:30pm- Took Daisy out and then got to work in my room on a blog post and my newsletter, so that I could schedule for later!

10pm- Made the finishing touches for the blog post and then scouted for freelance writing jobs online and sent a few applications and emails for jobs.

12:30am- Downtime for a bit to catch up on the website SparkPeople, another place for weight loss and healthy living support.

1:30/2am- Time to brush teeth and go to bed!

What I Love About Beachbody

A little over a month ago, I signed up to be a Beachbody coach, and it was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. It wasn’t one I took lightly and it had to come at just the right time. You see, I had been approached by a Beachbody coach over a year ago, who wanted me to be a part of her team. However, I did not feel connected to her or what she was offering at the time. It was tempting, I wanted to be able to make an income working from home and doing something as awesome as inspiring others to live a healthy life, but it didn’t feel like the right decision for me.

I still believe that, firmly. She was not the coach I needed to sign up with and it was not the right time for me! Plus I wanted to go it on my own and do things my way, and I was just beginning to learn about blogging and making it work for me. That had been a dream of mine for a long time because I’ve always loved to write. Towards the end of last year, I refocused my blog (and here you are!) and was still working on making health coaching work on my own.

Well, what do you know…? I started connecting with a few Beachbody coaches in various capacities. One of them in particular I felt like we were on similar pages and I knew I could trust her, because I already felt comfortable talking to her and resonated with some of her story. I still didn’t want to be a Beachbody coach when I first met her, but I was fascinated by how much she helped other people and the quality she provided. Like I said, I started making friends with other Beachbody coaches and saw how much they were benefiting from their Shakeology and the awesome workouts they were doing, and I just kept feeling pulled into this new world. Being an independent health coach, all on my own, was not going very well.

Honestly, I was struggling with my own healthy living journey because of a bunch of changes in my life since the summer and a lot of upheaval that left my world very unstable. Now that my world had gotten more stable, I was still struggling for various reasons. Healthy living has been an important part of my life for almost three years now, as I will be celebrating my three year anniversary in May, and I had not given up on it, but was having a lot of trouble getting back on track. Before all these changes in my life, I was so strong and motivated in my journey. Then all those changes occurred, and I let things go because it was just too overwhelming to juggle it all at once. These experiences and my struggle is what finally led me to make this wonderful choice to become a Beachbody coach.

Becoming a Beachbody coach was a decision that was made for a number of reasons.

  1. It provided me with the ability to help others with their healthy living goals. As I mentioned above, inspiring others to live a healthy life is something that I find truly amazing and it is one of my biggest passions.
  2. There is this huge supply of workout resources and nutritional supplements that provide a much needed boost! Take for example, the Shakeology shakes are really helping me. As I deal with autoimmune disease, joint problems, and other chronic issues that make me tired and fatigued throughout the day, drinking Shakeology is really making a difference. It is helping me get through my days with less napping and more overall energy!
  3. To help me with my own journey, and get me back on track. It has still been slow progress in the past month with getting my eating back on track especially and learning how to be consistent with my workouts again, but I am finally making the progress that I need… and I know that the container system that came with the 21-day fix package is something that I can use long-term, and is more practical for me than counting calories, which is what I used to do. Now it is about portions, getting in healthier foods instead of just focusing on how many calories the food has, and eating more whole foods.
  4. Being able to continue working from home, doing what I love while helping other people. I already was working from home as a freelance writer, but healthy living is such a huge part of my life and has been for a few years, that it really needed to be a part of my career as well.

Interview with Exercise and Nutrition Coach Esther Avant

Inspire the Best You: What is your job as an exercise and nutrition coach?

Esther: I work with women to help them lose weight, revamp their lifestyle and overall live happier and healthier lives. I use a client-centered approach where we prioritize making one change at a time and expanding upon it once it starts to feel like a habit.

ITBY: What do you find most rewarding in your work?

Esther: The most rewarding thing in my work is when a client tells me I’ve made an impact in her life. When someone sends me a text or email, or call me, to let me know that they’ve had a mental breakthrough or that they had more confidence to do this because of me. Their progress is the most rewarding thing as a coach.

ITBY: Why did you decide to become a coach?

Esther: I majored in exercise science in college and part of my college curriculum was becoming certified as a personal trainer. I got my first full-time personal training position right out of college and while working there, I realized that exercise wasn’t the issue for most people but how little they knew about good nutrition, so I expanded into that arena, as well.

ITBY: How do you help your clients with their goals and healthy living? I realize you already touched on this question earlier, but I would love to hear more!

Esther: We take a habit-based approach, and I like to help them simplify their efforts. There is just so much information out there that we become paralyzed by it and end up doing nothing. There really is no best way to go about it. My primary focus is to simplify and take action, to assess where they’re starting and prioritize what steps to take. Do you know what foods contain protein, why it’s important, and are you getting enough protein? Are you eating enough vegetables? Then we expand on those steps as they get the hang of it.

ITBY: What do you feel is your biggest struggle in your own healthy living journey?

Esther: When I started college, I was in the best shape of my life. I was very active and thin and able to eat whatever and whenever I wanted. However, during freshman year in college, I was thrown way off course; I had this super challenging curriculum and I felt like I was studying nonstop. The result was that I wasn’t making time to workout and wasn’t eating well, and ended up gaining a lot of weight without realizing it. When I got home that summer, I kind of realized what had happened. I felt hypocritical since I was majoring in exercise science, so I spent that first summer eating in a way that made me feel good and finding the time for exercise. I had to figure out how to prioritize it and make it work when I went back to school. It was a transitionary period where I realize that it was important to prioritize my health and having gone through that allows me to empathize with my clients more now.

ITBY: What is the biggest piece of advice you can pass along to those reading this?

Esther: It’s never too late to make a change. You deserve to make time for yourselves. Start with one small thing at a time.

Interview with Beachbody and Health Coach Elizabeth Gudrais

Today I am sharing with you an interview I held with my Beachbody and Health Coach friend, Elizabeth Gudrais. She is such an inspiration to many, including me, and I know she will help inspire you all too!

What is your job?

I am a fitness and wellness coach affiliated with Beachbody. At the most basic level, I am here to support people in using the company’s fitness and nutrition products: fitness programs such as PiYo, TurboFire, P90X, Insanity, Core de Force, and many others, and nutrition plans like the 21 Day Fix. I am here to help them through these programs and answer any questions they may have about our programs or supplements.

As coaches, each of us builds a unique business and brand; new customers trying a Beachbody program for the first time can choose the coach they want to work with based on the coach’s personality and the focus of his/her business. In my business, Living Vibrantly (www.livingvibrantly.net), I focus on helping women feel their best, claim their power, and discover their potential through exercise and nutrition. If we don’t feel well on a daily basis, it’s hard to find energy for work we are passionate about. It saddens me that many of us don’t even know how good we CAN feel in our bodies if we treat them right.

What do you like most about doing this kind of work?

The people!!!! All my life I’ve enjoyed meeting new people and getting to know them… their stories, their perspectives, how they view the world. It is a challenge taking that a step further and figuring out how to motivate people who may not respond to the same things that motivate me. But it’s a challenge I love and it definitely keeps each day interesting! I find it so incredible that with social media I can meet people from all over the world and we can come together and encourage one another in our online groups. The sense of community is so energizing and uplifting.

How did you get started in your personal healthy living journey?

I did not always have the perspective I have now, of loving and accepting my body (or at least working toward that daily). When I was younger, I really struggled with not liking my appearance. I was self-critical every time I looked in the mirror. Since I thought I needed to lose weight, I would skip meals and deprive myself of food. Then I would be starving hungry and I’d binge. I was stuck in a vicious cycle and it was miserable.

Breaking the cycle was not quick or simple. It started with a decision that I didn’t want to keep on living that way. It was so scary for me to eat three meals a day, and snacks in between. To eat when I was hungry and stop when I was full was completely foreign to me, but slowly I learned to make peace with the fear of gaining weight. That was the first step of a long journey. Along the way, therapy and Overeaters Anonymous (12 step meetings for food addiction) were immensely helpful for me.

Around the same time, I discovered yoga, which also helped immensely. Previously I had used exercise as punishment or at least as a way to keep my body under control. Yoga was something different: a type of movement that was more about the internal experience, and the mental and emotional benefits. For several years, the only exercise I did (other than walking) was yoga, and it really transformed my relationship with food and my body. Through all of the time I took for self-care and healing, I came to understand the emotions that were driving me to eat, and I developed better ways to cope (although I’m not perfect and there are still days when my desire to numb out drives me toward the candy dish or my old habit of skipping meals). These past experiences help me guide my clients through their own issues with food and body image.

What has been your biggest struggle in your own journey?

Depression and anxiety. Healthy habits (primarily nutrition, but also exercise, getting adequate sleep, and reducing stress) have helped a lot, but anxiety is still with me on an almost-daily basis (just not as severe as it once was), and depression still strikes sometimes without warning or explanation. At this point it’s a fact of life for me. I learned long ago, during the years when my lows were much lower, to keep going through the motions because it’s way worse if you don’t. (It’s been awhile since I lacked the energy to do even that, but I know it does happen and I’ve experienced it, so I know that even going through the motions sometimes isn’t possible for everyone in the depths of depression.) So I’ll always still get up and show up for work, but depression sometimes causes me to doubt my own abilities and isolate myself from other people, which, as you can imagine, isn’t good for my business, nor does it help me to feel less depressed. I’ve had to work on reaching out to friends to talk instead of isolating when this happens. Still, I believe that having these conditions makes me more sensitive to others who struggle with them.

Is there an event or something that happened to you that has made you more, or less, determined to live a healthier life?

My husband and I have been going through fertility treatment in one way or another for the past three years, and in 2014 I had a surgery related to this. It was supposed to be a straightforward procedure but I ended up having major complications and nearly dying. I was in the hospital for three weeks and on dialysis for three months because my kidneys weren’t working. I was incredibly sick and just physically weak. I had to learn to walk again after being bedridden. I lost 25 pounds and I’m only 5’5″! I was relatively young when it happened, so my body bounced back in most ways, but it took a lot of work and a lot of patience. Getting my daily workout in became a matter of fighting for my recovery. Cooking healthy meals became a matter of giving my body what it needed to regain strength. That experience changed the way I understood the purpose of fitness and nutrition. I had already started to care less about appearance and more about the health impact and the way these behaviors made me feel, but the experience of illness and recovery completed that shift. I will also say that the experience made me much more aware of savoring each moment and each day. I stress less and when I indulge, I don’t entertain guilt afterwards!

How do you stay motivated and encouraged each day to continue in your journey?

Honestly, it all comes back to the people. I love my team and I love the Beachbody community. They make it fun to show up each day and share about my workout or share recipes and trade nutrition tips. In addition to that, at this point many elements of healthy living have become habits that I do almost automatically: working out, prepping and packing a healthy lunch and snacks, drinking enough water and getting enough sleep.

There’s always room for improvement, and right now I’m working on getting better at detaching from upsetting news or interpersonal conflict. My goal isn’t to stop caring (I believe we need to stay engaged in our communities just as we do in relationships), but rather to be able to take a break and come back to it with a fresh  perspective and renewed energy.

I think it’s important to always keep growing, evolving, and reflecting. This is part of the path I try to guide my clients on, in addition to supporting them in setting up those basic healthy habits so self-care becomes a given.

What is one thing that’s happened in your journey, or career as a health coach, that has made you a stronger person?

I’m still dealing with the biggest challenge I have faced so far, and that is infertility. It’s been the biggest lesson in recognizing and admitting that some things are beyond my control. After many twists and turns, spurts of hope followed by disappointment, it’s still not clear whether we will be able to bear children or whether our family will be completed through adoption. As we cope with this seemingly boundless uncertainty, I’ve tried to do my best to share openly about our journey and our struggles, knowing that there are many people out there dealing with infertility. The stigma that’s attached to it compounds how difficult it is to go through; not only is it heartbreaking and often medically/physically painful and draining, but then on top of that people feel like they can’t reach out to others for support because it’s a taboo subject to talk about. I have sometimes felt fear that people won’t want to work with me because I haven’t successfully “solved the problem” by becoming pregnant, but through sharing my vulnerability, imperfections, and fears I’ve connected with so many people I never would have met otherwise, because something I posted spoke to them. It’s really remarkable, and it’s been so worth it.

How do you suggest others get started in their own healthy living journeys?

Well, obviously I am hugely partial to working with a coach and plugging into a community! If what you’ve read here has spoken to you, please reach out to me! You can find my contact info on my website. But beyond that, Beachbody has an enormous network of coaches, with just about every possible focus, interest, and style you could imagine—and of course you can look beyond our programs as well, to different types of health coaching. A coach can help you get clear about your goals and get realistic about how to fit them into your life. It’s almost not even about the coach; it’s you that does the work, not the coach. But knowing you’ll be checking in daily or weekly with a coach or a supportive group can be an incredible source of motivation and, from what I’ve seen, can provide that push to nudge people out of inertia.

What is the biggest piece of advice you have for them?

 Don’t be afraid to invest in yourself! Sure, there are lots of free options for healthy living… going for walks, following videos you find on YouTube, looking up recipes on the internet. Those options may work great for you—but if they’re not working for you, get honest with yourself about whether they ever will. Don’t underestimate the power of putting some skin in the game. Many people take something more seriously once they’ve spent money on it. They don’t want to have wasted the money, so they make sure to follow through on the investment.

You could say I have an ulterior motive here because my programs cost money, but I also have an online wellness community where I spend a decent amount of time supporting people without them ever making a purchase. I believe Beachbody has the best workout videos—hands down—as well high-quality supplements and simple, powerful nutrition programs. That’s why I work with this company. But I believe the group support is the magic that pulls it all together and makes it so effective. The bottom line is that, although I’ve heard many people doubt the value of the services coaches provide, I absolutely think group programs and the services of a coach are worth investing in. They were one of the things that made the biggest difference for me, which was what made me want to start this business in the first place.

New Year, New You 2017

As 2016 comes to a close, many of us are thinking about the New Year and what it will bring. We usually want it to be much better than the previous years, especially if the past year was particularly rotten. So we wish for the year to be over and start planning for the New Year.

A lot of people choose to make New Year’s resolutions. That phrase has such a negative connotation to it. I know that I, for one, shy away from making any resolutions. Sure, it sounds like a great idea and we start out with such high expectations and we are so motivated at first. However, we know that it’s almost always temporary, because who has actually made it a whole 365 days of a year of being focused on the resolutions they made at the beginning of it? I would hope the number wouldn’t be zero, but I also know that it is a sad percentage of the people that have made resolutions.

So for the past few years, and maybe even longer than that, I have avoided making New Year’s resolutions. Since the end of 2014, I have made goals instead and that has worked out so much better for me! These last few years have mostly been centered around making healthy living or self-improvement related goals.

Here are some examples of how my New Year’s goals have gone the past few years:

My goals for 2015:

1. Walk 1200 miles, indoor with videos or outdoors
2. Try at least 3 new workouts/exercises
3. Complete at least one 5K run
4. Start looking for a half marathon to do in 2016
5. Lose 75-80lbs

How I did:

1 & 3. Due to a foot issue that popped up in the middle of the year, I was not able to achieve the 1200 miles or the 5K run. However, I did sign up for a 5K run and did the 2-mile walk they were holding instead of backing out entirely.
2. For the new workouts, there was running and using a stationary bike. I obviously didn’t get to the third new exercise.
4. I found a half marathon and signed up for it for May 2016, thanks to the inspiration of a friend who did the race that year!
5. I lost 53lbs, so not quite the goal but this one I was least focused on the actual number. It was just nice to have something to shoot for.

My goals for 2016:

1. Complete the Tinker Bell Half Marathon
2. Lose the last 45-50lbs
3. Start making a livable income from my business
4. Write and publish my first book
5. Work on a more steady and consistent strength training routine
6. Develop a closer relationship with God

How I did:

1. I completed the Tinker Bell Half Marathon. It was, by far, my biggest fitness accomplishment so far! It was so hard, but so amazing at the same time.
2. Gained weight back instead of losing it. It’s all a part of my journey though and I will still continue moving forward. I will get the weight gained back off and then some!
3. I made income from my business, just not “livable.”
4. I wrote, and am nearly finished writing, my first book. It should be released this spring!
5. I put together a strength training routine which I managed to stick with for a couple months and was the most conducive one for me.
6. I developed a closer relationship with God and with reading His Word.

The end of 2015 was rough, considering that we lost my uncle and I ended up getting sick with a nasty infection. Then 2016 was full of chaos with a cross country move and what felt like a million other things going in all kinds of directions. So I may not have achieved all of my goals for either year, but I did achieve more than I would have if I hadn’t made the goals in the first place. They gave me something to aim for and thus provided me with more direction than just winging it.

My goals for 2017:

1. Lose 50-60lbs, which is 4-5lbs/mo and totally doable!
2. Complete the Tinker Bell Half Marathon for the second time this May, as well as a full marathon in November.
3. Start making a livable income off of my business- $1500 per month or more, ideally, by the end of the year.
4. Publish my current book that’s nearly finished and another book, whether it be a short eBook or a whole novel.

My suggestion to you is to focus on actual goals, instead of resolutions that you will probably give up on within a few weeks. Specific and measurable goals are always best because they allow you to track your progress and see where you’re going. Another piece of advice is to create a motivation/vision board for your goals to place somewhere where you will be consistently reminded of your goals. What can you expect?

What you can expect from me: I will be there to cheer you on, provide personalized advice and tips, give much needed support and encouragement, and even be there as a listening ear. Whatever you need!

It’s like having a coach and an accountability partner rolled into one! While we will have “live meetings,” you will also have the ability to contact me via email or text message any other time as well. So if you have one scheduled meeting with me per week you could use it to ask me for specific tips or tell me about your week ahead so I can help you find ways to prepare and/or cope with upcoming events. You can also tell me about the week leading up to the meeting, to report your food, exercise, or water intake to me as well to help you stay on track or anything you want.

Then the rest of the week you could send me an email or text message here and there, as needed to help you stay accountable or to ask for help in the moment. Knowing someone is there to answer questions or give advice as needed can be invaluable to you. I had someone in my house that I could do that with most of the time, or call my sister. However, sometimes our family and friends aren’t the most supportive of our goals even if they are well meaning or they are supportive but give in to your whims because they love you. It can be a great tool to have someone who is objective to help you along the way.

Personalized Coaching can be anything you need: video support, messaging by text or through an app, or email chatting. It could be a mixture or just one of those options. We can figure out what will work best for you after your initial consultation.
